When a person develops adult onset diabetes, tests indicate that there is a higher level of glucose (sugar) in their blood stream. At the same time there are elevated levels of stress hormones & chemicals in the blood plasma. Researcher Hans Selye, M.D. did all of the original works on stress and its effects upon the body. In his book, "The Stress of Life", he has indicated the following: "The predisposition to diabetes is inherited but it depends largely upon the way that the body reacts to stress as to whether or not a potential diabetic will develop the actual disease." He notes that insulin is given to improve the utilization of glucose as a fuel by the cells of the body. He observed that diabetes is not always due to a deficiency of insulin. Instead diabetes if often caused by prolonged stress which leads to an excessive production of stress hormones such as ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone), STH (somatotrophic hormone or growth hormone), and COL (cortisol or hydrocortisone). Over time, the increased concentrations of stress hormones are responsible for raising the blood sugar. Selye also stated that hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) should also be considered to be a stress disease. As discussed elsewhere on this web site, there are many types of stress. Life's frustrations & challenges can lead to intense or prolonged stress that will cause the overproduction of stress hormones that are involved in the development of diabetes. There is daily or situational stress which we experience in our everyday life circumstances. Then there is "affect" stress which is caused by emotions in the subconscious mind that have been repressed or hidden away for years. A person is usually not aware of "affect" stress until it is dissolved away with self-healing in inner awareness. Healers have discovered that certain subconscious feelings are more commonly found to be associated with diabetes. These are an emotional longing for what might have been, or a great need to control life's events, or a deep sorrow which is so intense that there is little joy remaining in life. Finally there is also "conflict" stress which is a disharmony between the conscious & subconscious minds. Outside of our conscious awareness, "conflict" stress consists of a conflict of perceptions, attitudes, or thoughts in the various levels of the mind. (All types of stress also lead to overeating and obesity which in our modern society also contributes to the development of diabetes.) Self- healing is an excellent method of detecting & relieving all types of inner stress. Self-healing is a crucial & beneficial step in helping to decrease the presence of stress hormones in the blood stream. Without the stress hormones in the bloodstream, a person is in a better position to reduce their reliance on diabetes drugs or insulin injections. Self-healing in inner awareness is also used to motivate diabetics to follow their prescribed diet & exercise program. The individual is strongly motivated to succeed while temptations and "irresistible" urges for certain foods are eliminated. This brings about a sense of control, feelings of self-empowerment, heightened inner strength, and pride in one's accomplishments. Regulation of blood sugar over many years is highly dependent on the diet & exercise regime, and self-healing enhances the chances for its success. Self-healing methods are used as well for visualization and mental imagery. In addition, deep relaxation can be used to reduce the pain & discomfort of nerve damage & dysfunction. Clearly, one can see that self-healing in inner awareness is a very powerful adjunct to the maintenance, control & healing of diabetes. |
